About the WIA

A community organization rooted in island life β€” representing residents, hosting events, and advocating for Ward's Island since 1913.

The voice of Ward’s Island

Established in 1913, the Ward’s Island Association (WIA) is a not-for-profit organization founded to represent the residents of what was then a summer tent community on Ward’s Island. The original mission: “to provide members with suitable accommodation, means and appliances for the pursuit and promotion of amateur sports and pastimes, and to promote the general interests of the members.” Today, we continue to connect and support the island community through social events, sports, and advocacy β€” representing approximately 600 residents in one of Toronto’s most unique neighbourhoods. Membership is open to all island residents and supporters.

How the WIA serves the community

πŸŽ‰

Community Events

From the spring dance to Gala Day long weekend to pumpkin carving and a celebration of our volunteers, we organize events that bring islanders and island friends together.

πŸ—οΈ

Shared Spaces

We maintain shared community spaces such as the Pavilion, which we built after the devastating March 2024 fire that destroyed the WIA Clubhouse. Plans to rebuild the Clubhouse are underway.

πŸ“’

Advocacy

We represent residents before the City of Toronto on issues including ferry service, housing policy, and infrastructure.

πŸ“…

Bookings

The Pavilion is available for community bookings. Check the events calendar or contact us to reserve a date.

πŸ“°

Communications

We keep the community informed through our newsletter, website, and notice boards around the island.

πŸ’¬

Resident Voice

The WIA provides a formal channel for residents to raise concerns, make suggestions, and shape community decisions.

WIA Executive Committee

Elected at the Annual General Meeting, our executive committee volunteers their time to serve the community throughout the year.

Honouring the traditional territory

The Ward’s Island Association acknowledges that we gather and live on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. The islands of Toronto Harbour have long held spiritual and cultural significance for these peoples.

Toronto is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and MΓ©tis peoples. We acknowledge Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Anishinaabeg nations. We are committed to learning, reflection, and respectful relationships with Indigenous communities.
