Tennis Court Etiquette
These guidelines help ensure everyone has a positive experience at the club. Please review them before your first visit.
- 1
If it has rained, Maintenance Manager Yolanda is the authority on whether the courts are playable. Updates are posted on the members forum. Courts aren’t playable if footprints are visible on the clay.
- 2
Courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Observe a 45-minute playtime limit when others are waiting — 45 minutes from the time you began (not from when others arrived).
- 3
Respect other players — avoid shouting or foul language.
- 4
Keep noise to a minimum — avoid disturbing players on neighbouring courts.
- 5
Respect line calls and call fairly and accurately.
- 6
Send stray balls to the back of the court, between points, by rolling them over. Call “LET!” if a ball could affect safety.
- 7
Wait for permission before walking behind or across a court — ask after a point ends, never during play.
- 8
Clean and sweep courts after use; dispose of trash properly.
- 9
Dress code requires shirts and shoes; wear clay-appropriate tennis shoes. Avoid street shoes that could damage the court surface.
- 10
Refrain from cell phone use during play.
- 11
Children under 10 require adult supervision at all times.
Code of Conduct
Abusive Behaviour & Harassment Policy
Wards Island Tennis Club is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all members, staff, and visitors. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards abusive behaviour and harassment.
This policy applies to all members, staff, coaches, volunteers, and visitors while on club premises or participating in club-related activities.
Abusive behaviour includes: threats, gestures, offensive remarks, slurs, offensive materials, intimidating comments or jokes, bullying, physical assault, or taunting.
Complaint Procedure
- If comfortable, inform the person directly — verbally or in writing. If the response is acceptable, no further action needed.
- If not comfortable or the response is unacceptable, report to the Club Chairs or any WIA board member as soon as possible, with all available details (acts, dates, times, place, witnesses).
- All reports are handled with strict confidentiality and taken seriously. The process includes acknowledging the complaint, gathering information from all parties, and taking appropriate action.
- Individuals found to have engaged in abusive behaviour or harassment may face: warnings or reprimands, a written apology, or suspension/termination of membership.
